All Season Tyres

All season tyres have been developed to provide motorists with a safe and reliable performance throughout the year on a variety of surfaces in all weather conditions. All season tyres, also known as all weather tyres, are targeted towards drivers in countries that experience a moderate climate all year round where weather extremes are unlikely to happen. This makes all season tyres the perfect choice for UK residents.

All season tyres are a popular choice, as they host a range of benefits, including keeping you safe on the roads in all weathers, without the hassle of having to change your tyres from season to season.

How all season tyres work

How all-season tyres work

All season tyres have been developed with a new formula of compounds and innovations that have led tyre manufacturers to integrate the characteristics and features of both summer and winter tyres into one in order to deliver performance throughout every season in all weather conditions.

The intermediate compound and innovative design within all weather tyres means they can be used in both cold and mild temperatures, adapting to the slight change in weather throughout the year. While they can cope with a few days of snow, they work well in cold and wet conditions, as well as performing well during the summer months.

All season car tyres also feature a complex tread pattern, which has been designed with a heavily siped surface, much more so than a summer pattern, but not as heavily siped as a winter tyre. This high-density siping aids in the tread grip the surface of the road whether the ground is frozen, wet or snowy.

The benefits you can expect from all season tyres

All-round performance

All season tyres provide excellent safety in winter and precision in the summer, allowing you to drive safely with confidence no matter the weather.

Adaptability

All season tyres offers adaptability and will react quickly to fast-changing weather conditions.

Convenience

All season tyres mean less hassle as you will no longer have to change your tyre from season to season.

Safety

All weather tyres offer a reduced risk of aquaplaning due to the innovatively designed tread pattern; It boasts tread blocks that have been developed to enhance dry braking performance for warmer conditions during the summer, as well as featuring sipes that provide interlocking grip in winter conditions including snow and ice.

Winter tyre law

Many all-season tyres feature the 'M+S' and 'Snowflake' designations that are evident on winter tyres which means you can use them in countries across the world where winter tyres are mandatory during the cold months.

Economy

All season tyres offer value for money as they are a cheaper option than if you were to buy a set of winter and a set of summer tyres.

All-season tyres have grown in popularity over the years, with well known brands such as Goodyear, Michelin and Bridgestone being among the premium brand tyre manufacturers who have developed popular all-season ranges.

Demand for all-season tyres across the industry is expected to continue to rise. This is due to the importance of having adaptable tyres that suit the new unpredictable weather conditions in the UK. Tyres need to quickly adapt from freezing temperatures to scorching days, and all-season tyres are the perfect choice for this.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that what you gain in convenience and versatility with an all-season tyre, you are likely to have optimal performance when compared to a specialist winter or summer tyre. Some tyre experts and manufacturers consider them a “Jack of all trades, master of none.” whilst all-season tyres are better in cold temperatures than a summer tyre, and vice versa, they are not as adaptable and designed to perform the way specialist tyres do. However, while an all-season tyre will never be better than a specially designed winter or summer tyre, they still provide an impressive mix of strengths and host an array of benefits that cannot be ignored.

Are all-season tyres right for you?

As the UK usually doesn’t see the harshest of winters, the question of whether we need to use winter tyres in the UK is a continuous debate. The choice to purchase specialist winter tyres focuses on just how much of the season will be below 7 degrees celsius. If the weather drops below that temperature for most of the winter, then buying a separate set of winter tyres and changing them over every October and March is the most sensible solution in order to stay safe on the road.

However, if the country only sees light or infrequent snowfall and the temperature rarely, if ever falls below 7 degrees, all-season tyres are worth considering due to their performance and adaptability. Also, in particularly low temperatures and regularly snowy conditions, an all-season tyre is likely to wear quicker which risks lack of grip in icy conditions, ride less comfortably and be a much noisier option than a winter tyre.

At the end of the day, you know the all-season tyres are unlikely to perform and offer as good quality as the best summer tyre on the market between the months of April to September, or the best winter tyre if fitted during October through to March. But All-season tyres will still provide a good mix of strengths in mild temperatures the country is likely to see each year.

With the UK weather being so unpredictable, all-season tyres offer you a less hassle option that gives you the peace of mind of knowing your tyres can handle the vast range of weather conditions you experience throughout the year.
